    Friday 17th May 2013

Jazz singer Herb Armstrong is truly larger than life. He is a big man with an even bigger voice.

Born and bred in New Orleans, Herb lived the dream of performing the infamous Bourbon St and French Quarter clubs as a daily reality. Sharing stages with Bobby Womack, Missy Elliot and the Neville Brothers, Herb has performed in US, Canada and Australia, including the prestigious entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas in US. He now lives in Brisbane.

    Julian Banks Trio

    Thursday 16th May 2013

    Julian Banks – Tenor Saxophone

     Christopher Hale – Bass Guitar

James Hauptmann – Drums and Cymbal

Banks grew up in Canberra and graduated in 2004 from the ANU Canberra School of Music, where he formed a strong friendship and musical bond with drummer James Hauptmann.

James Hauptmann is one of Australia’s most in demand Jazz drummers who has also made a name for himself touring and recording with the high energy ARIA award winning band, Bluejuice. Hauptmann’s explosive drumming is given room to spread out on many of Banks’s groove based compositions.

Shortly after moving to Melbourne in 2006 Julian began performing with bassist Christopher Hale (winner of the 2012 Freedman Fellowship) and is featured on Hale’s most recent (and critically acclaimed) album “Sylvan Coda” (2012, Which Way Music).

Hale’s unique approach to the acoustic bass guitar enables him to add chords and sonorous melodic phrases to the mix, in addition to a straight bass line. This lends itself beautifully to the trio format, providing a spacious platform for Banks’s brawny tenor sax.

The repertoire is comprised entirely of Banks’s own compositions, each with a strong melodic focus, complimented beautifully by this spacious and powerful rhythm section.

    Joshua Kyle Quintet

    Friday 15th February 2013

Relocating to the UK in 2009 Josh was quickly identified as one to watch. “Standing out in a town full of singers” is how Jazzwise magazine, London’s premier jazz publication described him.

Gaining support from UK heavy weight Claire Martin, OBE, BBC Radio 3 presenter and jazz vocalist, Josh was quickly working with the best in town. A chance meeting with Bassist/Producer Geoff Gascoyne (Jamie Cullum) saw the beginning of a musical partnership that would see Josh release his Debut album “Possibilities” as a part of the London International Jazz Festival in 2011.

Having played Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Jazz Club, 606 and The Spice of Life, Josh was able to create quite the buzz and build his career on an International level.

Josh returns to Australia in 2012 to release the album “Possibilities” touring nationally (The Paris Cat May 11, Stonnington Jazz Festival May 19, The Ellington Perth June 2, Venue 505 Sydney June 8, Darling Harbour Jazz Festival Sydney June 8, and Brisbane Jazz Club Brisbane June 21).

The album received rave reviews from the UK press and was album of the week on Jazz FM UK.  Josh is very excited to release his album in Australia.

    Keijzer & Delecca quartet

    Thursday 07th June 2012

This new Melbourne band evolves around two tenor players.  Whilst bringing the European and Australian sounds of jazz closer together, Anton Delecca and Remco Keijzer are capable of fitting into virtually any context and bringing a focused intent that can be, in turns, frighteningly powerful and painfully lyrical. Both players are inspired by the new generation tenor sax players but also never lost track of the giants of jazz. The interplay between Keijzer and Delecca is visceral and palpably energetic.

The rhythm section is an essential part of their wonderful chemistry and will have Tom Lee on double bass and Hugh Harvey on drums

All these ingredients make for a highly accessible concoction, because the rather verbose improvisation remains secondary to the groove.

    Andy Sugg Quartet

    Wednesday 12th September 2012

The Andy Sugg Group is a Melbourne–based quintet that features Andy on tenor and soprano saxophones. It includes Aaron McCullough (drums), Pat Farrell (bass), Nic Lam (guitar) and Kate Kelsey-Sugg (keyboard). The Group’s music embraces an eclectic range of compositional influences, which include contemporary jazz, funk, R&B and avant-Pop. The ASG is Andy’s “blowing band”, in that it’s a vehicle for extended improvisation in the best traditions of contemporary jazz.
The Group’s current album, The Berlin Session, was recorded in Germany in 2011. It explores a more acoustic avant-garde setting and features Kate on piano, with Berliners Jan Leipnitz (drums) and Sean Pentland (double bass). While firmly grounded in its stylistic time and place, this is music that has left home. It is music in the moment, played by highly articulate musicians with something to say both as soloists and as members of a collective.
The ASG’s previous album, Brunswick Nights, was recorded live in Melbourne. And prior to this, After Utopia, featured New York sax legend David Liebman in his first recording with an Australian group over his twenty-five year association with that country.
“Brilliant, sparkling, strongly surging…Sugg is a high order musician.” Sydney Morning Herald
“Andy Sugg has a rich tone, a rock solid technique and a sure attack that makes him one of the hottest tenor players in the country. Sugg is an outstanding soloist.” Rhythms Magazine
    “a dedicated warrior” David Liebman
“Andy Sugg, Afro-American rhythms from Australia: Is this Australian jazz’s moment to shine?” Corriere della Sera (Milan, Italy)

    Sean Coffin Quartet

    Thursday 06th September 2012

Sean Coffin – Tenor saxophone (SYDNEY)
    Greg Coffin – Piano (SYDNEY)
    Featuring:
    Craig Simon – Drums
    Sam Zerna – Bass
Not since 2006 have The Coffin Brothers, Sean and Greg, played together in Melbourne. Sean has recently toured the country (Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane) and been a somewhat regular at The Paris Cat with his ‘Melbourne’ Quartet. Joining him from Sydney will be his brother, a heavyweight by any standards on the piano.

“I have been fortunate to perform in a number of 20th and 25th Anniversary concerts this year. It has been a wonderful experience to celebrate with groups that have developed their music and friendships over several decades. Perhaps an even greater privilege is to witness the evolution of other bands, like the Coffin Brothers who are also celebrating their 20th Anniversary at this time. The Coffin Brothers are a remarkable team who combine technically brilliant playing with deeply expressive and soulful compositions to exemplify the very best of what is happening in this genre in 2011 anywhere in the world. There is great love for the jazz tradition in their music, a joy in the energy, spirit and language of jazz. They build on these powerful roots to create imaginative sonic journeys that are completely their own, brought to life in dialogue with their wonderful rhythm section. It takes a lot of determination to keep a band together for 20 years. It takes real artistry to do it with the depth and originality that Sean and Greg have.”

Steve Sedergreen Quartet with Special Guest Sunny Koll

    Saturday 25th August 2012

Inovative local jazz pianist Steve Sedergreen is no stranger to the Melbourne Jazz scene. His new quartet features hammond b3 maestro Kim Kelaart and Andrew Swan on drums and vocals and special guest vocalist Sunny Koll. Together they perform variations on established jazz, blues and funk styles.

Sunny Koll performed her first gig at age 13, precociously singing Steamroller Blues in a dingy inner city blues bar. She gigged her way through school and spent most of her time listening to the eclectic styles of Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Betty Davis, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Streisand, rock operas and musicals.

In 2008 Sunny independently released Vamp, which received national commercial airplay and had the third single Satisfied synchronized to the original Underbelly series. Vamp was also the vehicle for her signing a feature artist deal with Motorola across South East Asia.

She has sung on numerous tracks for an array of producers and DJ’s, and co-wrote and sang the Hed Kandy release ‘Live 4 Belivin’.

With a blend of jazz, soul and 70’s MOR, Sunny’s focus is on great songs and great musicians, from there everything else just falls in place.

    Wednesday 14th December 2011

The Alastair Kerr Quartet is the latest project from the drummer and composer; a distinctly Australian sound, but clearly influenced by his love of Brazilian and Cuban music. Well known to MJC audiences as a sideman, Kerr presents a program of his own compositions for the first time. Long a fan of South American music, his tunes combine the intricate rhythms of samba, rumba, tango, and the like, with a quirky harmonic sense and high level of group interaction. The group’s sound is underpinned by the responsive rhythm section of Kerr and Sam Zerna (acoustic bass), while Marc Hannaford’s energetic and highly rhythmic work on piano spurs trumpeter Pat Thiele in his improvisations – alternatively angular and cascading – in a band that uses delicacy and space in equal measure with intense, driving grooves.
