Brecker Mecca, formed in 2011, is at heart a tribute to the great American saxophonist Michael Brecker, whose legacy continues to live on since his death in 2007. Michael’s later work focused on small group modern jazz, and it is this repertoire that Brecker Mecca utilize. Earthy Blues with harmonic complexity, New York Latin Jazz and post-bop nuances, as well as some of our own compositions. Featuring Richard Butler- tenor sax David Hicks- drums Marty Hicks- piano and Kim May- bass.

The music draws heavily on Miles Davis’ second great quintet as much as it does Radiohead. ARIA nominated and South African born jazz vocalist and violinist Fem Belling has exploded on the Melbourne jazz scene. Her versatile voice and powerful stage presence lends authenticity, verve and warmth to the jazz classics. Born of an artistic family, Fem’s farther is a renowned jazz pianist and made sure she was bathed in the sounds of Ellington, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole and many more. Relocating to the UK in 2009 Josh was quickly identified as one to watch. “Standing out in a town full of singers” is how Jazzwise magazine, London’s premier jazz publication described him. 

Gaining support from UK heavy weight Claire Martin, OBE, BBC Radio 3 presenter and jazz vocalist, Josh was quickly working with the best in town. A chance meeting with Bassist/Producer Geoff Gascoyne (Jamie Cullum) saw the beginning of a musical partnership that would see Josh release his Debut album “Possibilities” as a part of the London International Jazz Festival in 2011.  

Having played Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Jazz Club, 606 and The Spice of Life, Josh was able to create quite the buzz and build his career on an International level.  

Josh returns to Australia in 2012 to release the album “Possibilities” touring nationally (The Paris Cat May 11, Stonnington Jazz Festival May 19, The Ellington Perth June 2, Venue 505 Sydney June 8, Darling Harbour Jazz Festival Sydney June 8, and Brisbane Jazz Club Brisbane June 21). 

The album received rave reviews from the UK press and was album of the week on Jazz FM UK.  Josh is very excited to release his album in Australia.

Sean Coffin Quartet

Sean Coffin has been a stalwart in the Sydney jazz and music scene for over twenty years performing mostly with his original groups the Coffin Brothers (20 years), Medicinal Purpose, SCQUINT, Eff Sharp and The Theory of Nostrils, Sean Coffin Trio and being an influential teacher.
Sean’s ten years living and studying in Boston and New York with(set the considerable foundation for his dynamic improvising and compositional style which will be on display in Melbourne once again.
Sean was recently performing at the Paris cat in January this year with this quartet and also with the Josh Kyle Quintet.
This will be a swingin and groovin ride through the original compositions of Sean as presented by this fanatastic group of Melbourne trio (Simon, Gassin and Zerna).

Cindy van der Ree is an accomplished jazz singer whose original compositions are compelling yet easy to listen to and lyrically unique. She is a local Melbourne girl with a love of music, language and culture. Cindy is relatively new to the jazz scene…but you’ll be impressed by the sincerity of her songs and beautiful voice.
At this performance, she will blend a few original tunes from her latest album ‘Some Kind of Beautiful’ with some well-loved standards, including her sublime French version of Autumn Leaves…a rather appropriate choice for the Paris Cat!

La Mauvaise Rèputation take their inspiration from the greats of the French Chanson tradition such as Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, Jean Sablon, and Serge Gainsbourg. They faithfully recreate the French standards of the early 20th century, sung in their original French, and played in the Jazz Manouche style of legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt.  Tonight they will be launching their debut CD “Tours Eiffel en plastique”, and featuring some surprise special guests in a gypsy swing extravaganza.

The music of this genre has a heavy blues and gospel influence and a deep infectious groove. Adrian Cunningham has already been established as one of Australia’s finest Jazz musicians and multi-intstrumentalists, with countless club and festival appearances and a number of highly acclaimed releases. The new album Walkabout was recorded during a brief visit to Adrian’s hometown Sydney, a collection of original works inspired by time spent in NYC and travels around the globe. Jazz guitar giant Ian Date (Ireland) along with his brother Nigel collectively known as the Date Brothers join forces with the legendary violinist Daniel Weltlinger (Lulo Reinhardt, Monsieur Camembert, Nadya and her 101 Candles Orkestra) and bassist extraordinaire Howard Cairns (Way Out West, Ross Hannaford) to create what is quite possibly one of the world’s finest Hot-Club quartets in the style of the great Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

Formed 18 months ago and influenced by its rugged surroundings, the bands material consists mainly of Julius’s own compositions but also standards and often extensive group improvisation. SEAN COFFIN is an internationally renowned saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader of many different original musical projects, three of which are the acclaimed Coffin Brothers (Live 2004, Living In Apocalyptic Times 2007) and scQUINT (Sean Coffin Quintet) and Sean Coffin Trio. Sean is an undergraduate of Berklee College of Music (BMus) 1996 studying with George Garzone, Hal Crook, Bill Pierce and post-graduate of Manhattan School of Music (MM) 1999 studying with Bob Mintzer, Garry Dial and Ludmilla Ulehla, both degrees majoring in Jazz Performance on the Saxophone.

The Alastair Kerr Quartet

The Alastair Kerr Quartet is the latest project from the drummer and composer; a distinctly Australian sound, but clearly influenced by his love of Brazilian and Cuban music. Well known to MJC audiences as a sideman, Kerr presents a program of his own compositions for the first time. Long a fan of South American music, his tunes combine the intricate rhythms of samba, rumba, tango, and the like, with a quirky harmonic sense and high level of group interaction. The group’s sound is underpinned by the responsive rhythm section of Kerr and Sam Zerna (acoustic bass), while Marc Hannaford’s energetic and highly rhythmic work on piano spurs trumpeter Pat Thiele in his improvisations – alternatively angular and cascading – in a band that uses delicacy and space in equal measure with intense, driving grooves.

Legendary American Trombonist Jim Pugh comes to the Paris Cat for one night only. Jim is New York’s top-call freelance trombonist for film scores, records, television and radio advertising. He has performed on over 4500 recording sessions including dates with Paul Simon, Barbara Strisand, Tony Bennett, Madonna, John Schofield, Billy Joel, David Sanbourn, Pink Floyd, Nancy Wilson, George Benson and is currently touring Australia with Steely Dan. Jim is the only recipient of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Science Virtuoso Award for Trombone and voted MVP by the New York recording community for five years. This performance will feature Steely Dan pianist Jim Beard coupled with local rhythm section Frank Di Sario-bass and Danny Farrugia-drums.

The newly formed Cameron Earl quartet brings together a wide range of talents to create a highly original and unique sound. The tunes are mostly composed by the band leader, the versatile and seasoned trumpeter Cam Earl. Cameron was a finalist in the inaugural 2010 James Morrison Brass Prize at the Melbourne International Brass Festival and was also a finalist in the 2011 JMO National Big Band Composition Competition.
